In the story about the Green Knight and Sir Gawain we are shown many qualities of the knights code and how they are followed and disrespected. The Green Knight comes to Arthur and gives a challenge to which Sir Gawain accepts. Gawain takes the challenge, because he views himself as the least valuable knight. This shows his honor and respect for his fellow knights. Sir Gawain later in the story lies to the Green Knight about his wife later in the story showing his dishonor to the knights code.

The language in the story reflects more on themes of medieval romance. The Anglo Saxon language used more types of figurative language such as allegories and allusions. the language also shows a difference in more references to woman becoming more important throughout stories. This also correlates to the knights code by respecting woman and becoming more equal.

In the historical background project, I learned about the many different events that occurred in the Middle English time period. I researched about famous vikings first. I learned about Leif Erickson and how he was the first European to set foot in North America. I learned about the architecture and design of castles at the time. Their were three main types; gothic, concentric, and Norman. The styles all varied drastically in design.

I learned about the Black Plague and how it killed millions of Europeans. The plague was spread by diseased rats everywhere. Europe was dirty in cities which the plague fed on. The Italian Renaissance was also occurring during the Middle English time period. The Renaissance gave us artists like Da Vinci and Galileo. Many great philosophers and inventors were active during the time. Gutenberg invented the first mechanical printing press. Also Viking and Norse mythology was popular during the time. It was heavily influenced by Greek mythology and worshipped many of the same gods. Yggdrasil was the center of the mythology. It ruled the nine worlds and grew from the well of Urd.

Social commentary has become an everyday thing for most people. Society is constantly using social media to give their opinion about politics, technology, and any other thing imaginable. Social commentary can be negative or positive depending on the topic. It gives an insight of what someone thinks truly about society.

I think technology has been the greatest thing to happen to society and also the worst. It connects people to others through social media, but it also destroys real life relationships. Technology and social media was given to people and younger generations without any supervision. This led to people abusing and wisely using the technology. The new age of cell phones and technology was almost experimented with by our newer generations and the affects it has on us. I think eventually society will turn over and we will go back to a point where social media and cell phones aren’t a main focus of peoples lives or at least I hope so.

The field of dreams movie related heavily to Beowulf through the similarities in the heroic themes. Both stories follow the same hero qualities throughout. Both of the stories start in the middle of a incident and lead with action. They both have a hamartia, which is similar. Both characters go on a journey to find what they want.

In Field of Dreams, Ray’s fatal flaw is his pride. He wanted to be different from his father and do something spontaneous with his life. He builds the field to be better than his dad. Beowulf also has a fatal flaw. His pride also gets him killed while he is fighting the dragon.

Learning about the Anglo Saxon time period was fun and interesting. It showed how most of the writing techniques and styles evolved into what they are today. It showed how the heroic story hasn’t rrally changed at all in the last 500 some years. Every style of writing we have can corolate to some way to the styles of the Anglo Saxon time period.

Elegies are another prime example of a form of writing that has stayed very similiar. Sad stories are always going to be sad and give some sort of insight to what the writer is feeling. They can however be different in the way they are presented by different adjectives and format. The Anglo Saxon time period is very important in relation top modern writing.

Every passage of text you’ve ever looked at had probabaly had some form of clutter within it. Clutter is a big part of our every day lives and nobody notices it. Learning to unclutter passages was very difficult and annoying to me, and yet I still write with it in every one of my sentences. The big clutter words like “to” and “of” are my worst enemy. Every time I type those words I want to look away, because I know I have to rewrite it. Even that sentence has clutter. How annoying.

Clutter is everywhere in society. It is especially present in poltics. Jsut about everything they say is clutter and garbage coming from there mouth. They use clutter to dodge questions and really beat around the bush. Just like most of my school work. Just kidding. Clutter is seemingly impossible to elimante in all of litereature, because it is apart of our every day lives. Clutter is the spot on your back that itches that you can’t quite reach.

When I first heard we had to write a scholarship essay about ourselves, I felt annoyed like I do with most assignments. I didn’t want to do it. Write about something you’ve done or experienced, it was something I’ve done a thousand times. I slacked it off and didn’t do it until it was due in 2 days. But when I wrote this essay, I felt it was very easy to write about my story and what came out of it.

I thought the story I had was a pretty unusual one, but came out nicely on to paper. I found it to be very fresh in my mind almost as if I was still living that experience. I reflected on the hard time I had and really thought about some of the qualities I had gained from that circumstance. I felt weird bragging about it in a sense to random people I didn’t know, but it felt good to know that I had an experience that made me a better person.
